UN Removes Restrictions on Syrian President Ahead of White House Visit
Security Council representatives approved to a United States-backed measure ending penalties on President Ahmed al-Sharaa of Syria before his presidential meeting the following week.
He was appointed transitional president after leading an insurgent campaign that drove out the previous leader in winter 2024, bringing to a close thirteen long years of internal conflict.
The US representative Mike Waltz at the United Nations said the UN had sent "a strong political signal" that affirmed Syria's transition into "a fresh chapter" after Assad's removal.
He had been subject to UN sanctions while commanding the Islamist group the HTS movement, which was formerly linked to the terrorist network. The US removed the organization from the catalog of international terrorist organizations during July.
More Penalties Removed
Furthermore, global sanctions were ended on restrictions targeting Syria's Interior Minister the interior minister.
The Syrian diplomatic chief welcomed the removal of these restrictions, declaring through digital channels: "The nation shows its gratitude toward America and allied countries for backing the country and its population."
Forthcoming Presidential Visit
President Sharaa's presidential meeting at the start of the week occurs subsequent to US President Donald Trump remarked that Sharaa achieved "significant advancement" in establishing peace to the conflict-ravaged nation.
The two leaders convened initially this past May, while the American president was in Saudi Arabia while traveling through the Middle East.
Following that encounter, Trump portrayed him as a "resilient figure" possessing a "powerful background".
The HTS organization he led served as al-Qaeda's branch inside the country prior to breaking relations in 2016.
Earlier American Trip
This week's diplomatic engagement will not be Sharaa's first trip to America in the current year. In September, he emerged as the first Syrian leader to speak before the global assembly in Manhattan in almost 60 years.
During his address, he stated the country had been "reclaiming its rightful place across international circles" and demonstrated unity with Palestinian citizens in Gaza.
