Throughout a large portion of the fifth and final season of *Stranger Things*, Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are held captive inside a mental fortress built from the recollections of the villain Henry. Their quest for freedom in episode 6 has them experience a traumatic incident from Henry's early years—a moment that may just hold the key to defeating him for good.

A Journey Into the Tunnel

When she finds Max in the psychic realm known as Camazotz, Holly discovers she is taking refuge in a chamber that Henry avoids at all costs. An accidental discovery a spyglass pilfered from Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the danger lies beyond the cave. Matching her view through the cap, she and Max tumble into a subterranean passage.

They watch a Henry as a boy encounter an injured and paranoid man. Attempting assistance, the man reacts violently, striking Henry in the hand. To protect himself, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly wonders aloud. It was a factor, but the act went deeper than a fight for life.

Similar to other plot points this season, the full story behind the encounter was first explored the theatrical production Stranger Things: The First Shadow.

A Naval Mystery and Stolen Research

This backstory explains the legendary naval test, which reportedly teleported a vessel into a realm later called the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the sole survivor was the ship's commander, who emerged in a catatonic condition with an different blood composition.

The captain's son, a young Martin Brenner, sought to replicate this dimensional breach in Nevada. One of his scientists stole research materials to sell to the Russian agents, who were desperate to launch their own interdimensional projects. This spy in the mine shaft is that employee.

So, What's in the Case?

Given what is known about his research, the case most likely held some of Captain Brenner's infected blood. In the scene, Henry is wounded and bleeding. He likely becomes contaminated upon contact with the blood, leading to the development of his psychic abilities—abilities he would inadvertently transfer to the children in Hawkins Lab.

A second theory, the box could have held dark matter that was destined to travel to the secret facility, where it helps stabilize the mirror dimension. The prequel shows that the boy ended up in the Abyss, reappearing 12 hours later as a different person. Throughout the play, he struggles with the whispers of a sinister presence, reminiscent of how the character Will was controlled by the entity in an earlier season.

The Power of Fear

His lasting fear linked to that memory highlights how deeply scarring the incident was for him. Even as he orchestrates the Hive Mind and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him remains. The villain weaponizes terror, and the series is building toward a showdown between Vecna and Will, who has overcome his personal demons to fortify himself.

This journey has effectively disarmed Vecna. More importantly, Will now is aware of what his enemy truly fears, which could provide a key upper hand in the series finale that awaits.
