Russell Wilson Responds at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Over Jaxson Dart Comments
NY Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson didn't mince words on social media this Tuesday, reacting to latest comments from his former coach Sean Payton.
"Tasteless... but not surprised...," Wilson stated on X. "Didn't realize you're still bounty hunting 15+ years later through the media."
The quarterback's remarks directly referenced the infamous Bounty Gate issue from 2009-11, when Payton was coaching the Saints.
During that period, the NFL found that the Saints had incentivized team members for making hard hits on opponents. Consequently, Payton was suspended from the NFL for a full year.
The Cause of the Latest Dispute
Wilson's reaction came after Payton made comments after Denver's historic comeback win over the Giants. Payton remarked that the team had "discovered new energy" with their new QB, who has replaced Wilson as the first-string QB.
Moreover, Payton implied that he had told Giants owner John Mara that he would rather facing Wilson instead of Dart.
"I spoke to John Mara not too long ago and I said, 'We were hoping that change would've happened long after our game,'" the coach commented.
Background of the Wilson-Payton Partnership
- The quarterback was traded to the Broncos from the Seahawks in 2022 and signed a five-year, $245M contract.
- The Broncos went 4 wins and 11 losses in his debut year prior to Denver brought in Payton, who was returning to coaching after a stint in broadcasting.
- The coach replaced Wilson late into the 2023 campaign, a decision that prevented the quarterback from getting injured.
Had Wilson remained on the team by spring 2024, his $37 million salary for the following year would have been locked in. In the end, Wilson was released, marking the contentious split between the player and his mentor.
