In spite of Overwhelming Achievement, Expedition 33 Creators Aim to Maintain Team Compact
The game Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is not only a strong Game of the Year candidate, but also a massive commercial success. Developer Sandfall Interactive and publisher Kepler Interactive disclosed that this title surpassed five million copies in sales, and that’s despite it being a day-one release through the Game Pass service.
The game's performance came as an unexpected turn for the team. I firmly believed that we'd create a solid title achieving reasonable sales results,” a senior team member stated.
A technical director remarked this title's critical score, rated 93 by critics, was “maybe the biggest shock to the team relative to what we anticipated and the actual outcome proved to be. Because when it dropped the entire team was screaming and jumping. The energy was electric.”
This triumph resulted in work on new free content for the game including novel settings, enemies, along with challenging bosses, as announced will release within the “upcoming month[s]”.
Nevertheless, while the game is growing, fans shouldn't anticipate the team will expand. We've built an excellent group with a strong creative director possessing strong ideas for this game and also for new ideas. Our goal is to maintain the close-knit size that worked for this game then develop large projects one by one,” the producer noted.
Their team size drummed up significant conversation following launch. Some developers, like Hideo Kojima, looked at the development group as a perfect example for game development. While Sandfall was and is truly compact compared to its AAA counterparts, one glance at the game's credits indicates many individuals participated; Sandfall partnered with overseas animators to work on gameplay animations, to illustrate.
“Some hiring will occur a little more certainly should there be a future production surge in upcoming years,” they commented. “Yet I picture rather a creative atelier with a small number of exceptionally gifted creators that create artistic collaborations.” It was stated that Sandfall’s vision as a company “aims to keep the key advantages that enabled this success from the start.”
While it may be not the right time to reveal exact details about future projects — believe me, efforts were made — the developers understand their fundamental principles. “Turn-based gameplay, I think it's in the DNA of what we built,” the lead programmer remarked. “It's a bit too early to announce our next interests, however, it's crucial to adhere to our creative core with [a] strong narrative universe plus innovative play that inspires the team.”
The developer mentioned that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 began with the visionary “work[ing] on his dream game. It is hoped that's something we will be able to do in coming projects.”
