Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a coordinated attack targeting an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.

The location, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in hills just above the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a number of approach shafts down to the facility... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the operation late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - also known as the so-called Islamic State - enforced jihadist rule over parts of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation underscores our UK leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any resurgence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," the British Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

UK warplanes have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of the group following its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of the UK armed forces participating in this mission for their professionalism and their valour," he commented. "They were among numerous British personnel deployed over the festive period. This action, to remove militants who pose a risk to our security, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."

During December, the US military executed what it described as a "massive strike" against Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an attack resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports Islamic State still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Syria and Iraq.
