Christantus Uche Sparks Comfortable Crystal Palace Victory at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Despite embarking on their maiden European adventure, Oliver Glasner's side are adapting at a rapid pace. Without star figures like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles left Dublin with a comfortable win that virtually guarantees them a spot in the Conference League playoffs.
Another victory in their next match against Finnish KuPS should be sufficient to secure straight entry to the last 16, especially after a previous stumble against Strasbourg.
Squad Members Seize the Moment
This match offered a platform for some of Palace's fringe players to impress. Christantus Uche, making only his second start since arriving on loan from Getafe, opened the scoring with a well-taken finish. Striker Eddie Nketiah contributed a another, finding the net for the second game in succession.
A Shelbourne side that had concluded their domestic season proved no match against a largely rotated Palace outfit. The Londoners were further weakened by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are out with knee problems.
Control Established from the Start
In spite of heavy rain in Dublin, Palace quickly took control. A flowing move in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, let Nketiah to set up Uche for a simple finish.
Youngster Adam Wharton came close soon after, fizzing a powerful effort over the bar. Nketiah subsequently appealed for a penalty after racing into the box, but the official waved away the appeals.
The formerArsenal striker didn't need to wait long to get his goal, prodding home from close range after Uche's shot had struck the post.
Shelbourne were clinging on for dear life. Defender Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to avoid a booking for a couple of robust challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the woodwork with a powerful header from a corner.
Pino Seals the Game
The match was effectively over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past some weak challenges before coolly slotting a shot past goalkeeper Wessel Speel to make it 3-0.
Following the break, coach Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to withdraw key individuals like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse came close to scoring with his first touch, but saw his shot blocked.
Esse was desperately unlucky later on, seeing one attempt crash off both posts before being gathered on the line. Uche also missed a sitter of a chance, showing there is still scope for development in his game.
The only worry for Palace was a late knock to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This allowed 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to make his senior debut, rounding off an otherwise positive evening for the traveling side.
