After multiple episodes of suspense, schemes and backstabbing, The Celebrity Traitors has reached a nail-biting end
Warning: spoilers ahead - This article reveals details from Celebrity Traitors finale
Over the course of the show, audiences saw murders, betrayals, serious side-eye, and a memorable moment that cut through all suspense.
However on the final evening, the ultimate victor of the inaugural celebrity edition was revealed.
Out of nineteen participants, only five remained: Deceivers and loyal players facing off for the winnings.
Before long, the field narrowed to only three contenders: the final players.
Ultimately, comedian Alan Carr emerged as the winner, in a surprising result that went viral and left him emotional.
"It's been tearing me apart, I'm so sorry," he exclaimed, admitting to the remaining faithfuls that he'd always been one of the deceivers. "I feel terrible about this."
"You did brilliantly," they comforted him. "It's all right."
Social media immediately exploded with this development. "The worst deceiver being the best traitor ever," commented a viewer.
"It couldn't have been a better conclusion," wrote another, while someone else described it as "the TV moment of the year."
His chosen charity, a cancer charity, will receive all the prize money, with the final pot amounting to eighty-seven thousand five hundred pounds.
Alan Carr's transformation from comic relief to cold-hearted killer was one of the standout highlights of the series.
However, his victory still shocked viewers surprised, as noted by entertainment reporters.
"The thought of him, of all people, pulling off a masterclass in deception felt just as probable as him maintaining composure through his comedy routines."
During follow-up conversations, the other contestants summed up the reasons nobody had truly doubted him.
"Alan could have come down to breakfast in a green cloak and I wouldn't have believed he was deceiving us. I was too busy laughing," a player said.
"Most people didn't vote for him because how can you eliminate a person so charming?" questioned a different contestant.
The winner stated he had "absolutely loved" his experience with the show.
"I'd like to do it again... I doubt it would work again!"
The final episode was extended to 70 minutes on television. There was an unusual opening than usual, as every celebrity were aware who would appear at the morning gathering.
There was particularly inspiring, and very un-Traitors-esque music, as the episode revisited key scenes from every remaining player's experience in the game.
True to form, Alan Carr provided unforgettable quotes.
"To be honest, I began the competition a bit of an anxious mess. I've thrown close allies under the bus, I've murdered beloved figures in plain sight. I'm clearly a better liar and traitor than I thought."
At the same time, another contestant commented that reaching the conclusion was "significantly more pressure than competing with a national team", while someone else said he was "completely amazed" to have lasted this long.
In the beginning in the episode, several players appeared to be making a bid to become the new style icon of the competition, replacing the previously eliminated style leader.
Carr emerged at breakfast looking like a 1950s US chat show host in patterned burgundy attire, before changing into a bejewelled white suit.
But he was outstyled by a fellow player's burgundy formal wear. What a look.
Next up was the competition, with the final players getting on board a locomotive called - of course - The Traitors Express.
This task involved destroying images of former contestants. Spare a thought for a player who was hit in the head multiple times by the cover of a heavy wooden box.
Soon after, the moment arrived for the roundtable.
Two traitors made a pact beforehand, pledging to support each other. "We've progressed significantly, I'm not going to throw him under a bus," said one, while the other simply laughed.
However, one did stick to their agreement. But, managing to stay under the radar for most of the game, the other still got the most votes.
The remaining traitor looked like he was in a world of pain to be the final deceiver remaining. "Now I'm on my own, I feel terrified," he said. "I'm a loose cannon, without direction."
Social media and onlookers were equally disappointed.
"I did NOT want this contestant to be eliminated. A truly loveable traitor," said a commentator.
"Your legacy will remain in the show's legacy," wrote another user.
However, there remained no time to dwell on this departure. Before long, they were at the final stage - this being the moment everyone anticipated.
The last players gathered around the fire pit. Meanwhile, the partnership collapsed, precisely when it mattered the most, in an absolutely shocking development.
A player was painfully banished - after a shock vote from their partner, who turned against them.
"This pains me to be stabbed in the back last minute like that," said the ousted contestant. Subsequently, we learned that if they ever communicate, the betrayed player calls their former ally as a traitor.
Ultimately, just three players remained in the game: the last participants.
A contestant, appearing quite pleased, chose to conclude the competition. The same decision was made by another, and it all came down to the final participant, who made the identical choice - resulting in the deceiver was the winner.
According to commentators, the moment where the other players consoled the winner was "beautiful TV". "I predict it could be a contender for outstanding scene at next year's awards," they commented.
Fortunately, the champion soon recovered from his bout of tears, and could finally appreciate the moment.
"What a rollercoaster. I was awful at lying, my expressions gave me away and here I am a winner," he said.
He also joked about the memorable elimination - his best friend in an early episode - by reaching over the presenter in the concluding moments and touching her cheek.
"You've got something on your face," he said, with his characteristic laugh.
The last few weeks of celebrity gossiping, scheming and sometimes surprising incidents may feel like a bizarre fantasy. Yet it actually occur. And we will miss it.
