2026 Dubbed the Year of the Croaking Craze.

Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent indie games event was highly engaging, my biggest takeaway was perhaps unexpected: I am declaring that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.

A surprising total of five of the highlighted projects—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these amphibious creatures. Given that a gathering of frogs is called an army, it seems they are launching an invasion.

A Legacy of Leaping

Frogs are anything but new to the gaming landscape. Ever since the era of Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a niche presence. But, their visibility has seemingly increased in recent times.

A simple search for "frog game" on Steam unveils an absolute deluge of results. While, some of these are low-budget titles, a great many are legitimate titles centered on frogs.

Charting the Croak Comeback

To understand this phenomenon, I performed a deep dive into the last half-decade of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My criteria was based on clear indicators, focusing on games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.

The findings paint a clear picture: a steady uptick from less than 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.

This dramatic growth prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The frog's rising status in the public consciousness is somewhat apparent elsewhere, for example the revival of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. However, the wave in gaming looks uniquely powerful.

The Allure of Amphibian Mechanics

Honestly, this is a shift I can fully endorse. Frogs offer inherent appealing traits for game developers.

  • Weird Little Guys: They are incredibly easy to be designed as memorable characters that frequently end up as a standout feature in any game.
  • Unique Gameplay: Their stretchy limbs and prehensile tongues enable a host of innovative control schemes.

Many of the showcased games smartly employ these traits. Examples include the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.

What the Future Holds

So, what does this mean for 2026? With five frog games publicly revealed before the year has even started—and the chance for more—the stage is set for it to be the biggest year for amphibian gaming.

Should these games perform well—and based on past trends, games from this showcase tend to succeed—we could very well be witnessing a full-blown amphibian entertainment revival.
